Course: Safety of Maritime Systems

Master degree Sustainable Maritime Engineering

Imparting knowledge about the buoyancy of bodies in a damaged state. In addition to the physical fundamentals, deterministic and probabilistic criteria for the evaluation of the buoyant condition resulting from damage are presented. Leakage safety regulations are discussed based on this. In a further focus, the capsize safety of intact ships is considered. Here, in addition to quasi-static heeling moments, the rolling behavior in regular and irregular sea states is analyzed and evaluated. Questions of WHAT, WHY, and HOW are brought to the fore. Knowledge of the structure of relevant regulations will be provided to the extent that listeners can evaluate their principled approaches. It is not the aim of the course to convey all details of the (continuously changing) regulations. Listeners will be able to understand leakage safety and stability requirements for ships and to consider and evaluate their implications in the design process.

This module is provided in english.

Seminar

To deepen the acquired knowledge, homework will be handed out, which must be worked on. The acceptance of the solutions is a prerequisite for admission to the examination.

This elective module is part of the Master's degree program in Ship and Ocean Engineering. Building on the acquired knowledge in the field of ship hydrostatics, more in-depth knowledge in the field of leakage safety as well as safety against capsizing is taught. For this reason, the following prior knowledge is required:

  • completed bachelor in engineering sciences including mathematics for engineers I - III
  • Basics of ship design
  • Ship hydromechanics I

Written exam, 90 minutes duration. The date of the exam will be announced during the semester. In order to be admitted to the examination, the homework must have been successfully completed.
